The Clearaudio Trackability Test Record starts out with your basic 'test record' test-tone right/left channel checks, then it is on to the good stuff. Tracks 4-15 are what you are focusing on when using this Trackability Test Record. 1st start on track 4 and listen for distortion. If none, move on to track 5, and so on. Once you find the track that distortion is introduced, make a note of it. 2nd, you will repeat this process, but this time starting on track 10. Listen for distortion, if none, move on to track 11, and so forth. Once you find the track that distortion is introduced, make a note of it. 

Once you have determined the two tracks with which distortion is introduced, here is where you start to adjust your set up. You will mainly be adjusting (increasing or decreasing) anti-skate, but subtle adjustments to VTA, and tracking force (recommended to max) will help in getting rid of the distortion. After making each subtle tweak or adjustment, replay each track where you 1st heard the distortion and evaluate. Repeat as necessary. 

Side 2 is mainly for use with the Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer (sold seperately) and is used to accurate set up your cartridge's azimuth. 

Keep in mind, the tracks used for the Clearaudio Trackability Test Record are 'torture tracks' and do not represent what you will find on a regular LP pressing. This Audiophile Edition 180g LP is a great way to fine-tune your turntable's tonearm and cartridge set up and to see what it really can do! Don't worry if you cannot get your cartridge to track correctly at 100 microns, or even 70 microns, all arms and cartridges are different and track best at different levels. 

Scan capability test 

The scan capability test provides information about the scanning characteristics of your tonearm / pickup combination. Clearaudio has chosen a frequency of 315 Hz, the amplitude of which increases from 50 to 100 (1 = o, oo1 mm) in 10 steps. The higher the value achieved, the better the respective tonearm / pickup combination is able to scan difficult groove modulations without distortion. 
Before performing the scan test, please ensure that the disk player / drive is accurately balanced, as well as the correct setting of azimuth and vertical angle, we recommend using the Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer (as soon as available). Start the test with the minimum recommended force recommended by the manufacturer, As well as the appropriately set anti-clocking force - step by step - until both channels are scanned cleanly. This is sufficient to reproduce the maximum amplitudes of the ampilitances clean and undistorted. Please do not exceed the recommended lifting force recommended by the respective manufacturer in order to avoid damage. The sample amplitudes of 90 and 100 represent extremes which never occur in the music signal cut on the plate, and therefore only say something about the possible scanning reserve of the pickup. 

If one channel distorts more than the other, change the anti-clocking force until the signal is scanned in both channels. The end of the sampling capability is reached as soon as the test signal begins distorting in both channels. At this point, please complete the scan capability test. This serves to adjust the optimal bearing force and anti-skating. 
We would like to point out that the setting of the anti-clocking force in empty slots leads to incorrect results. Therefore use Track 6 and Track 12 on page A of the Clearaudio Trackability Test Record to set the anti-clocking. 
Achieving the music reproduction of records at the highest level requires a sampling diamond optimally positioned in the record groove. 

There are several ways to achieve this: 

a) optical adjustment, 
b) adjustment by ear, 
c) measurement-technical adjustment 

The possibility a) is limited to the eye and is not sufficiently precise for the following reasons: The position of the contact points of the diamond in the groove flanks determines the horizontal balance and is not to be assessed statically but dynamically under the influence of all occurring forces during operation. The frictional force is applied to the diamond in the tangential direction, producing a perpendicular force component which reduces the vertical angle of the angle and the bearing force. Not correctly compensated skating force acts in the radial direction and thus not only causes a different contact pressure in the right and left groove flank, but also causes a "spreading" of the diamond on one side, which is equivalent to a further reduction in the bearing force comes. Depending on the tone arm construction, additional torsional forces can occur on the needle carrier. All these influences make the purely optical adjustment secondary. 
Possibility b) has always been favored by experimenting HIFI enthusiasts who find that differences in the azimuth from the optical vertical can often dramatically improve the sound in many small steps and countless listening comparisons. However, this method can prove to be very time-consuming and often does not achieve the accuracy of a measurement-technical setting. 
The most accurate and objective method is the possibility c) using measuring instruments. As a replacement for expensive meters, Clearaudio has developed the Azimuth Optimizer. 
For this purpose, however, a measuring sound board is required with a horizontal monosignal (see page B). In the Clearaudio development laboratory it was determined that the setting of the azimuth has the greatest effect on the level difference between the right and the left channel of a horizontal monosignal can. 
It can be seen from the diagram that optimal positioning of the sample diamond is achieved when the difference between the right and the left channel moves on the average by 0dBV (LCD display of the optimizer should fluctuate by zero). This can thus be used for the adjustment.
